You can be sick spiritually just like you can be sick physically. Sometimes, the symptoms of spiritual sickness are obvious.
Galatians 5:19-21 (AKJV)
Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, 20 idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, 21 envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God
Colossians 3:5-9 (AKJV)
Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry: 6 for which things’ sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience: 7 in the which ye also walked some time, when ye lived in them. 8 But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth. 9 Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds
Romans 1:18-32 (AKJV)
18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; 19 because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. 20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: 21 because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. 22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, 23 and changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things. 24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: 25 who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.
26 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: 27 and likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet. 28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; 29 being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, 30 backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, 31 without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful: 32 who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.
Ephesians 5:3-7 (AKJV)
But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints; 4 neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks. 5 For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. 6 Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience. 7 Be not ye therefore partakers with them.
These Scriptures provide us with the seed and the root causes of spiritual sickness.
If any of these things are apprearing in your life along with things like pride, fear, and anxiety then you are suffering from spiritual sickness. Their are signs of physical sickness and how we know when we are getting the flu. It is pretty obvious and we generally get motivated to do something about it because it causes us discomfort, reduces our quality of life, and keeps us from fulfilling our desires. If we are reasonably well adjusted, we don't desire to be sick or reorient our life as though sickness is normal. We don't see people building lifestyles around having the flu or choosing to have cancer.
Of course, it does seem as though some enjoy being sick, but the rest of society considers them to be abnormal.
But, when it comes to spiritual sickness, we have come to accept that as normal. We build lifestyles and practices around our spiritual maladies. We even claim that there is no such thing as spiritual sickness - just choice. But, just like there is a norm for physical well-being that we should desire, there is also a norm for spiritual health and well-being.
This norm is found in God, our Creator, and He reveals it to us through His Scriptures, the Bible.
It was illustrated and lived out for us in Jesus Christ, and now, through faith, we can partake of His life and righteousness.
The only way to find spiritual health is through a relationship with Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ by faith. We need His righteousness.
We cannot develop our own righteousness to fix our problem because WE are the problem. We carry spiritual sickness around in us and it taints all that we do. We need healing from the outside. We need a full dose of the person and work of Christ to eradicate sin that results in spiritual sickness and brokenness. Another kind of spiritual sickness that often goes unnoticed is something called "Spiritual Lukewarmness." Jesus accused the church at Laodecia of this in Revelation 3:14-21. He said that they were neither cold nor hot. They thought that they were rich and in need of nothing. They thought that they were fine.
Jesus denounced all of this and said that they were actually very needy. They just didn't realize it.
Jesus said that he would rather they be hot or cold, not lukewarm. If they were hot, that would be better, obviously. If they were cold toward God, even that is better than being lukewarm because you know that you are separated from God. You are not living under the illusion of being close to God when you really aren't. Luke 14:34-35, which says, "Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is fit neither for the soil nor for the manure pile. It is thrown out."
"Jesus isn't just making a cute little analogy here. He is addressing those who aren't willing to give everything, who won't follow Him all the way. Jesus is saying that lukewarm, halfhearted following is useless, that it sickens our souls.
Jesus is saying this kind of salt is not even 'fit for the manure pile.' Wow.
How would you like to hear the Son of God say, 'You would ruin manure'? When salt is salty, it helps manure become good fertilizer ... but lukewarm and uncommitted faith is completely useless.
It can't even benefit manure."
Would my "faith" ruin manure?
Is it completely worthless?
Or does my faith become a conduit for God to work in and through my life in a way that He is glorified and the world is changed?
Do I live for myself and ask God to bless my endeavors, or do I live for God and ask Him to use me as He sees fit?
I examine your own heart this morning and ask God to reveal your lukewarmness and spiritual sickness to you. Do you live for myself and do what is comfortable for you?
Is spiritual lukewarmness affecting your own life?
Spiritual Sickness gives a place to the devil and Lukewarmness will provide a crack in the door just big enough for the devil to slide in. Mental Assent will give the devil approval to stay in once he pushes his way in.
The apostle Paul admonishes Christians in
not to give place to the devil.
“Place” means a location, home, opportunity.
If it was not possible for the devil to gain strongholds in the lives of Christians, would warnings like this be necessary?
Most of us understand that we can bring demonic oppression into our lives by participating in sinful activities, hence the need to avoid certain things, but many are not aware that the enemy also successfully gains Strongholds in our lives by the sins of others against Us. A good example would be the person who has suffered abuse at the hands of a parent, guardian or spouse, or someone who has lived in the chaotic environment caused by the addictive strongholds of a loved one (parent or spouse).
A person who has lived under the heavy hand of abusive control, or in any “out of control” environment, usually needs freedom themselves from a rebellious, controlling spirit of witchcraft (the scriptures equate rebellion with witchcraft) –
1 Samuel 15:23 (KJV)
23 For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king. (Where there is the one, the other is always present).
Don’t be shocked at this. It is only natural to rebel against oppression or chaos.
The problem is that Satan capitalizes on our helplessness and desperate need for freedom from these things in our lives and then he strategically orchestrates and brings in a matrix of predator demons and evil spirits to supposedly help us deal with our difficult situations.
I have spoken with numerous individuals over the years who had lived for many years under someone else’s controlling thumb, or some other type of “out of control” situation.
These individuals may or may not be gentle people who would never knowingly harm anyone, but upon escaping from their oppressive/out of control circumstances determined (either consciously or unconsciously) that no one was ever going to Control their lives again or that they were going to be in complete control of at least one area of their “out of control” lives.
Without realizing it they gave place to a spirit of rebellion (a very real, non-benevolent being). A Demonic Spirit.
The effect of this oppression usually results in a person who feels oppressed by making commitments, and when commitments are made, they are not often kept. People frequently find this type of individual undependable. Instead of rebelling only against the oppression of the enemy, these people rebel against legitimate authority including the commitment and accountability we, as Christians, are all called to give to one another. This in turn leads to loyalty Issues. If we cannot be committed, accountable and loyal to each other as brothers and sisters in Christ—do not think we can be committed, loyal and accountable to Jesus! Do not be deceived in this. Our walk with Jesus is visibly demonstrated in our walk with each other.
Another spirit that is frequently a part of this matrix of rebellion and control is a lying Spirit (also a non-benevolent being).
Where there is no loyalty or sense of commitment, there are often lies. Not necessarily whoppers, just little white lies to keep from hurting someone’s feelings or from having to confront unpleasant situations. This brings us to another predator that hangs out with the Self-Deprecating Spirits and that is the Spirit of Fear. However fear is not the stronghold spirit.
Another manifestation of the self-deprecating Spirits is some type of Compulsive Behavior Motivated by the need to have some sort of handle of control in an otherwise uncontrollable life or environment.
I am providing you with another glimpse of how these hateful Self Deprecating Spirits Operate through Hidden Works of Darkness, Hidden Oppression and Hidden Word based programming REVEALING TO YOU HOW THEY are working against us, or up on us without our revealed knowledge? There is absolutely no shame in admitting that the enemy has dug in and fortified his strongholds within our Souls over the years. But shame on us if we allow those Evil Spirits to stay once it is brought to our attention. ONE that they are there and TWO how they are working!
Every adverse situation in our lives has its environment of spirits working diligently to both Oppress us and OPPRESS others through us. We cannot allow the enemy to use us any longer; we can no longer allow demons to have a home or opportunity within our Souls and Bodies any longer. If the Enemy does, it is no one’s fault but our own.
Do you have a fear of being taken advantage of and oppressed if you allow yourself to become committed and accountable to others? Because of this, do you have a problem with demonstrating loyalty to others?
Do you find yourself telling lies in order to avoid commitment or conflict (you’d rather keep the peace)?
Are you bound by compulsive behavior that gives you a false sense of control? Even the newest Christian has all authority over the powers of darkness.
This is a vertical authority (as in rank) – not a horizontal tug of war.
Ask the Spirit of the Lord to reveal if Self Deprecating Spirits through Hidden Works of darkness, Hidden Oppression and Hidden Word based programming are operating in your life.
If so, You Must Repent Today from any sinful behavior known or unknown that has helped to strengthen these spirits.
Such as THE SIN OF Lack of Faith;
Romans 14:23 (KJV) and he that doubteth is damned… for whatsoever is not of faith is sin.
